Instructor

Nityananda Chandra started memorizing verses in 99' but it wasn't until later that he made good strides is his practice. In downtown Portland he saw elementary students reciting the Bhagavad Gita, chapter 15, from memory. At the time he was living as a monk and he thought to himself, "Why just these small kids, living as a monk I should be able to do that as well." Some time after he discovered that it was a lot easier to retain long strings of verses that naturally go together rather then separate important ones. In this class, many of the previous students, such as Capu, Chance, Bailey, and others also assist in teaching verses and often offer to individually tutor outside of our regular class times.

Besides the benefits of studying with an excellent teacher like Nityananda Chandra, you’ll feel eternal the Divine presence with every verse you learn. I memorized chapter 15 from Bhagavad Gita in 2021 and even today the Sanskrit is fresh just like the first day; I can assure you´ll memorize with your heart and not just your head.

Nityananda Chandra is my first sloka teacher, and one I would come back to time and time again. His approach is very inclusive and detailed oriented. He made me feel very capable of reciting slokas from Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam by encouraging me, including me in live recitations, helping me with pronunciation, chanting the slokas in a particular way and never making me feel any lesser. I would highly suggest anyone (whether you enjoy memorizing things or not) to join his classes as he dives deep into the wonderful meaning and stories surrounding the slokas we learn; he will even take time to practice with you one on one. He has a great way of filling the class with so much nectar that you will learn not just Sanskrit and shlokas but tons of Vedic wisdom.
